Alrene Richards Barr is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s (ATL) Senior Director of Public and International Affairs. She oversees International Affairs, Protocol, and Diplomacy.
With over 30 years of experience in the aviation industry, Barr created the International Affairs program at Hartsfield-Jackson. She works in partnership with the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs and regional and international economic development leaders to enhance business relationships for ATL globally. As the world’s busiest and most efficient airport, Hartsfield-Jackson provides air connectivity to Atlanta and Georgia from 150 domestic and 70 international destinations on every habitable continent.
The architect of the ATL Sister Airports Program, aided by the Georgia Consular Corps, Barr directs global outreach efforts that serve as the genesis for expanded and new route development to global destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, Middle East, and North America.
As part of Atlanta's commitment to serving its diverse, international constituents and visitors, Barr is one of 12 cultural competency trainers for the City's 8,000 employees.
Barr serves as a board member of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister Cities Committee. Her work has been featured in publications in 22 countries, including Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, China, South Korea, the Czech Republic, France, Brazil, El Salvador, Jamaica, Israel, and Canada. She is an active member of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)/CIFAL Atlanta Airports and Economic Development Global Training Program, Welcoming Atlanta iSpeakATL Taskforce, Georgia Council for International Visitors, and Middle Georgia State University Advisory Council.
She volunteers as an instructor to airport managers in various developing nations, including The Gambia, Malawi, and Suriname. She holds master's degrees in International Business and in Management and Leadership. She earned the International Airport Professional (IAP) designation, the world's highest airport management professional accreditation, and a joint certification from Airports Council International (ACI World) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Barr was recognized by the Georgia House of Representatives in 2017 with a commendation for outstanding public service and she is the only female recipient of the Aviation Trailblazer Award presented by the Jamaica Aviation Authorities. Additionally, Barr was named one of the Atlanta Tribune's Women of Excellence and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Association of Georgia. Most recently, she returned to her native island, where she was honored with the Jamaica National Order of Distinction with the rank of officer (OD) from the Government of Jamaica.
