As Chief Public Affairs Officer, Viji oversees teams developing and driving Liberty Mutual’s legislative and regulatory policy/advocacy at the federal, state, and international levels, as well as political action, compliance and civic engagement.
Viji joined Liberty Mutual in January 2014, in what was then the newly created position of International Public Affairs Officer. Viji was appointed Chief Federal Public Affairs Officer in October 2021.
Prior to joining Liberty Mutual, Viji was chief trade counsel to the Committee on Ways and Means in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she worked for over 12 years. While on the Committee, Viji played a key role in crafting and passing major trade legislation, including legislation to normalize U.S. trade relations with China and Vietnam and extend trade preferences to sub-Saharan Africa and other regions. She also provided oversight and advice to members of Congress on ongoing trade negotiations and worked with Administrations to implement subsequent negotiated agreements, including most of the agreements negotiated after NAFTA through 2012. Her office was instrumental in achieving inclusion of meaningful labor and environmental provisions in U.S. trade agreements.
Before joining the Ways and Means staff, Viji was an associate at the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. She also held an appointment at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where she focused on international development. She has served as a visiting lecturer at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School and as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law School. She is a past board member of the Washington International Trade Association (WITA), and also the 2011 recipient of WITA’s Lighthouse Award for her contributions to trade policy during her government career.
Viji continues to be a frequent lecturer on U.S. international trade policy. She is the co-chair of Georgetown Law School’s International Trade Update, an internationally recognized trade law conference annually held in Washington, D.C.
Viji serves on the Board of Directors of the Potomac Whitewater Racing Center, which is dedicated to developing U.S. whitewater slalom athletes.
Viji graduated from Duke University (1993) and Duke University Law School (1996), and was a member of the Duke Journal of Comparative and International Law.
