Scott Cooper and his wife Suzy currently reside in Edgefield County, South Carolina, where Scott served for two years on the county Tax Appeals Board and close to two years on the County Hospital Board. For several years Cooper wrote a weekly column for The Edgefield Advertiser, the longest continuous running newspaper in the state of South Carolina. When Cooper was elected Chairman of Edgefield County Council in January 2019, he chose to discontinue his local weekly column during the season he serves in that role.

Cooper began serving on the Edgefield County Council in January 2017. He won that seat in the 2016 election cycle. He was re-elected for a second term during the 2018 election cycle and a third term during the 2020 Cycle. He has been serving as Chairman of Edgefield County Council since January of 2019.
