Carsten Spohr has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Lufthansa Group since May 1, 2014, and leads the global aviation group with a total of 300 subsidiaries and 105,000 employees worldwide.

After graduating from the University of Karlsruhe with a degree in industrial engineering, Mr. Spohr obtained a commercial pilot's license at the Lufthansa flights schools “Verkehrsflieger-Schule” in Bremen and Phoenix, Arizona.  As a member of the central junior research group, he then completed the trainee program at Deutsche Aerospace AG, Munich.

In 1994, Mr. Spohr returned to Lufthansa and initially took over the management of central personnel marketing. From 1995 onwards, he served as chief of staff to the Chairman of the Executive Board until he assumed responsibility for Lufthansa's regional partnerships in Europe in 1998.

In 2000, Mr. Spohr was appointed head of the alliance management for Lufthansa Airlines. In this function, he was responsible for the management and coordination of Lufthansa's worldwide cooperation partners, including the Star Alliance and regional partners. In 2003, he also assumed responsibility for the Lufthansa’s passenger strategy. In October 2004, Mr. Spohr was appointed to the Executive Board of Lufthansa Airlines. His responsibilities included the hub management, which included both commercial activities and cabin crews.

Mr. Spohr was appointed on January 15, 2007, as Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Cargo AG, the logistics arm of the Lufthansa Group. From January 1, 2011, he joined the Executive Board of Lufthansa Group and assuming the position of Chairman of the Lufthansa Airlines.
