Virtual Briefing on Global Supply Chain Risks Featuring McKinsey Global Institute Director Jonathan Woetzel, McKinsey Partner Eric Chewning, and Senior National Security Council Director Peter Harrell

On the approximate one-year anniversary of the Center's program on supply chains and China last April, the China Center is pleased to welcome back McKinsey experts for a briefing and discussion on the latest in global supply chain risks with a focus on China.

The briefing will feature U.S. National Security Council Director Peter Harrell, McKinsey Global Institute Director Jonathan Woetzel, and McKinsey Partner Eric Chewning. They will provide an update on the current state of global supply chains, assess the worldwide disruptions arising from China's ongoing zero-covid approach as well as Russia's war on Ukraine, and forecast trends through 2022 and beyond. 

 

Peter Harrell is the Senior Director for International Economics and Competitiveness on the White House National Security Council (NSC) staff for the Biden administration. Harrell was an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). He previously served in the Obama-era state department, from 2012-2014 as a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Counter Threat Finance and Sanctions within the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, and from 2009-2012 on the Policy Planning staff.

Jonathan Woetzel has been instrumental in building McKinsey's China office. In addition to his work helping Chinese and other Asian businesses prepare for global growth, Jonathan is a director of the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), McKinsey's business and economics research arm. He also leads McKinsey's Cities Special Initiative and is responsible for convening McKinsey's work with city, regional, and national authorities in more than 40 geographies around the world. Jonathan has led numerous research efforts on global economic trends, including growth and productivity, urbanization, affordable housing, energy and sustainability, e-commerce, and the economic impact of the internet, as well as on productivity growth and economic development in China and Asia.

Eric Chewning co-leads McKinsey's Aerospace & Defense Practice in the Americas. He has 20 years experience advising decision makers in national security markets, and supports clients in the areas of growth strategy, strategic due diligence, M&A advisory, corporate portfolio management, supply chain resiliency, and strategy-based transformation. Eric's experience spans the public and private sectors. Eric was the chief of staff to the Secretary of Defense. In this role he led the secretary's executive team, working across the military services, Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, and senior civilian political appointees. He also provided counsel and advice to the secretary on all matters concerning the department. Prior to serving as the chief of staff, Eric was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Policy. In this capacity, he was the principal advisor for analyzing the capabilities, political and overall health of the defense industrial base.
